Dynasim AB - The Company

Dynasim's mission is to develop the software tools that industry needs for solving demanding modeling, simulation and design problems.

The emphasis is on handling large, multi-domain systems efficiently. We utilize an object-oriented modeling methodology pioneered by Dr Elmqvist and refined into a new modeling language called Modelica. To achieve efficient simulation, we use computer algebra to transform models into a more suitable form for numeric calculations.

Knowledge base

The experience and knowledge base of Dynasim include: language design, compiler technology, formula manipulation (computer algebra), C++, simulation software, modeling in various domains, multi-body systems, drive trains, control theory, digital control, optimization, hardware-in-the-loop simulation, computer graphics, and graphical editing.

History and People

Dynasim was founded in 1992 by Dr Hilding Elmqvist and is privately owned.

Hilding Elmqvist attained his Ph.D. at the Department of Automatic Control, Lund Institute of Technology in 1978. In 1972-1975, he developed the first version of the simulation program Simnon which is sold world wide and have more than 2000 users. His Ph.D. thesis contains the design of a novel object-oriented model language called Dymola and algorithms for symbolic model manipulation. Elmqvist spent one year in 1978-1979 at the Computer Science Department at Stanford University, California. Elmqvist was in 1984-1990 the principal designer and project manager at a subsidiary to Alfa-Laval called SattControl in Malmö for developing SattGraph, a user interface system for process control and SattLine, a graphical, object-oriented and distributed control system. In 1992, Elmqvist founded Dynasim AB. Elmqvist took the initiative in 1996 to organize an international effort to design the next generation object-oriented language for physical modeling, Modelica.

Dag Brück joined Dynasim in 1993 after working with Omsim development at the Department of Automatic Control, Lund Institute of Technology. Dag is a C++ expert and a distinguished member of the ANSI/ISO C++ standardization committees since the beginning in 1989. He is Head of the Swedish delegation of the ISO committee. Dag is reponsible for the graphical user interface of Dymola, and a major contributor to the semantic specification of Modelica.

Sven Erik Mattsson joined Dynasim in August 1998. He attained his Ph.D at the Department of Automatic Control, Lund Institute of Technology in 1985. His thesis was on modeling and control of large horizontal axis wind power plants. In that period he also worked together with Hilding Elmqvist to develop methods and software for real-time systems. After that he became responsible for the research in Computer Aided Control Engineering, CACE at the Department of Automatic Control. The results of  those projects include the development of the object-oriented modeling language Omola and the interactive modeling and simulation environment OmSim. Sven Erik is a member  of the Modelica Design Group since its conception. His knowhow, in particular, on DAE's, hybrid modeling and computer algebra is essential to Dynasim.

Hans Olsson joined Dynasim in January 1999 after attaining his Ph.D. in Numerical Analysis from Lund Institute of Technology in December 1998. His thesis was on improving solvers for stiff ODE's and DAE's by analyzing the computational process, in particular the iterations necessary to solve the system of equations in each step. In parallell with his thesis he wrote an object-oriented solver, Godess, which implements the ideas from his thesis. Hans Olsson is head of the Modelica Language Specification Group of the Modelica Association and editor of the Modelica specification. At Dynasim, Hans key responsibilities include numerical software and the implementation of the Modelica translator.
