Modelica - the New Modeling Language

A major effort at Dynasim during 1997 has been devoted to Modelica - the new modeling language - which was defined within Technical Committee 1 of Eurosim.
Dr Elmqvist took the initiative for this joint European effort last summer and there have been 8 meetings during the period September 1996 to September 1997. Modelica version 1 is now ready and several vendors are working on supporting tools. The design group is now heavily engaged in standard function and library development.

The design group has written more than 10 papers about Modelica. At the "First World Congress of System Simulation", Singapore, September 1-3, Dr Elmqvist presented the paper: "Modelica - The Next Generation Modeling Language - An International Design Effort" (coauthored by S.E. Mattsson). Five papers about Modelica were presented at the "ESS '97 European Simulation Symposium", Passau, Germany, October 19-22. The interest was high with more than 50 people attending the Modelica session and the special panel discussion on Modelica.

Dymola with Modelica Support

Dymola has been extended with partial Modelica support and a capability to automatically translate models in the Dymola language to Modelica.

Exhibition of Dymola in Singapore and Passau

Dymola was exhibited at the "First World Congress of System Simulation", Singapore and at the "ESS '97 European Simulation Symposium", Passau.

The next Dymola and Modelica event will be "EUROSIM '98 - 3rd EUROSIM European Simulation Congress", Helsinki, Finland, April 14-18.

User's group meeting in Passau

A Dymola user group meeting was held in conjunction with the "ESS '97 European Simulation Symposium", Passau. There were about 25 attendees. Dynasim presented news about Modelica support in Dymola, new features of the simulator and presentations were made by two industrial Dymola users: ABB and Benima.

Dymola Courses

On September 11, an inhouse Dymola course was held at BMW. A Dymola course was organized by Bausch-Gall GmbH in Munich and held by Dr Martin Otter, DLR on December 4. Since November 1997, a course is given at the Technical University of Munich "Objektorientierte Modellierung Mechatronischer Systeme" ("Object Oriented Modeling of Mechatronic Systems") using Dymola as the modeling and simulation tool (2 hours lecture and 1 hour training each week).

On November 11, a 4 hour tutorial "Objekt-Orientierte Modellierung mechatronischer Systeme mit Modelica" ("Object Oriented Modeling of Mechatronic Systems with Modelica") on the ASIM '97 conference in Dortmund.

At the ASIM meeting in Heidelberg (March 2-3, 1998) there will be a session about modeling of hydraulics in general and in a second session about Dymola and the hydraulics library in particular. The speaker is Professor Peter Beater.

During 1998, BAUSCH-GALL GmbH will organize Dymola courses on the following dates: April 24 and November 6.

Dymola and Matlab/Simulink

Dynasim belongs to the MathWorks connections program of third-party suppliers. Dymola now has support for Matlab version 5.1 and Simulink 2.1. Several of our customers use Dymola to generate real-time simulation code for downloading to dSPACE equipment.
